MARC STRETCH BIO

Marc Stretch has always been about expanding experiences. As a son of and Army Sergeant, he spent most of his life moving around from place to place. This has provided him with a unique outlook on life.

Already a well traveled youngster, Hip-Hop gave him an outlet for all of his rambunctious energy and quirky visions of life. After serving time as a dancer for various Hip Hop crews, Stretch decided to try his hand at battle rhyming. Quickly he moved up the local rankings and became a fixture on the battle scene.

In 1997, he connected with Prozack Turner and DJ Design at a San Francisco nightclub. Numerous shoplifting sprees, alcohol binges and spectacular recording sessions later, they were a group and a force to be reckoned with.

The group then went on several domestic and international tours, released albums, and enjoyed underground hero status. During that time, Stretch has collaborated with numerous artists around the world including Jake One, Jay Dilla, Supa Dave West, Azeem, DJ Zeph, Jerney, Zion I, The Poets of Rhythm and G Koop. He has also found time to hone his skills as a DJ spinning both stateside and abroad, playing alongside legends like DJ Revolution, Mind Motion, Scotty Fox, Africa Bambata, Grandmaster Flash, DJ Q-bert, DJ Apollo, DJ Shortkut and The Oakland Faders.

Stretch and Turner continue to fly the Foreign Legion flag, even after the departure of DJ Design. Stretch is also a functioning member of the northern California super-group 75 Degrees (Dining Room Records), one third of the Marval Team Up (Gory Island Music) and currently the tour DJ for Azeem (Oaklyn Records/Ohm Records).

OPEN MIC NIGHT
Doors: 7:00 PM | Show: 7:30 PM
Ages: all ages

HopMonk -- the Abbey (MAP)
230 Petaluma Avenue
Sebastopol, CA 95472

There are many acts that started at the open mic which are now playing gigs in the beer garden, opening for national touring bands and even headlining their own shows at HopMonk. There is also a weekly feature, selected from a previous open mic, which plays an extended set at prime time. There is even a chance you might be invited to join Bill, to perform live on KSRO, where he is a regular guest on The Drive with Steve Jaxon.

But the open mic is not just for musicians... There have been comedians, beat boxers, jugglers, magicians, a Hula Hooper and even an audience. Yes, an audience. It is a lot of fun, even if you are not a performer, to come down sip on a fresh craft beer and enjoy some locally grown, organic entertainment.

Roger Clyne doesn't like serving the musical version of junk food. I like to put a little more heart into my cooking than that, Clyne said.

For over a decade, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers have avoided unnecessary additives, preservatives and sugary substances that may initially be satisfying, but ultimately provide no sustenance. Instead, they have been serving up nothing but uncompromised, unadulterated, pure rock-n-roll. RCPM have stuck to their credo of letting art lead commerce by mixing relentless guitar licks, four part harmonies and thought-provoking lyrics.

Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers have released six consecutive albums that have debuted in the top 10 on Billboard's Internet Sales chart, the first independent band to ever accomplish that feat. Two of those albums, 1999's Honky Tonk Union and 2004's ¡Americano!, debuted at #1. That streak of creating timeless rock music continues with RCPM's long awaited sixth studio album, Unida Cantina.

Roger Clyne, guitarist Jim Dalton, drummer PH Naffah and bassist Nick Scropos are renowned as one of the tightest, most exciting live acts on the road today. Over the past year, The Peacemakers have toured the U.S. several times over, traveled south of the border to play in Mexico and completed their first ever tour of the United Kingdom. The energy between the band members, experience and comradeship shine on Unida Cantina, the most upbeat and collaborative effort yet for the band.

It's been 3 years since we've released a studio album, Clyne said. During that time, we've incorporated Jim Dalton into RPCM and he brings a unique magic to our chemistry. It took some time to know ourselves again. It's always a challenge to remain consistent without being predictable; to create something novel, but not novelty; to appreciate success without becoming complacent. With Unida Cantina, we took our time and poured our hearts into it. Now that we're ready to share it. ...it's almost a rebirth for me.

On Unida Cantina, RCPM teamed up with producer/engineer/mixer and long time friend Clif Norrell (The Refreshments, Rush, No Doubt, R.E.M) to record 13 new songs. Collectively, the songs on Unida Cantina represent both the disillusionment and enlightenment of where Clyne's life is today compared to where he thought he would be when he was in his immortal 20s. In many ways, it turned out different than he thought it would. But it also turned out better than could have imagined.

RCPM look to share those feelings of coming to terms with the differences between the expectations of youth and the reality of emerging adulthood on Unida Cantina. But in spreading that message, the Peacemakers also wanted to rock. Like their past albums, RCPM hope Unida Cantina will bring people together and unify those of like mind and heart. Sometimes people need a unification point or a place where they know they're not alone to face certain challenges, like a cantina. My music will often bring people to that cantina, Clyne said. If you need a cantina, you can put on Unida Cantina.

Unida Cantina is Clyne's most infectious record since he and Naffah released their 1996 cult-classic, Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and Buzzy with their previous band, The Refreshments, on Mercury Records. Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and Buzzy was Radio & Record's ninth Best-Selling Debut Album of the Year, went to #1 on Billboard's Heatseeker Chart and spawned two popular radio hits, Banditos and Down Together. The Refreshments performed on national late-night shows and Clyne wrote and performed the King of the Hill theme song with the band.

With Unida Cantina, Clyne found his songwriting soulmate in Dalton. For the very first time, I found someone's inclusion that didn't chase me or put me off my artistic vision. It opened the world to possibilities rather than close it. I felt magic, Clyne said.

Likewise, Clyne said he was more open from gathering input from everyone in the band than he has been on any other record. Both Scropos and Naffah, childhood friends originally hailing from The Windy City, had big input on the final production of Unida Cantina.

The result is pure American guitar-driven roots rock-n-roll. All Over the Radio is the album's first track, mixing the classic elements of RCPM music in crunching guitars and mariachi horn section. Other rockin' songs soon to become instant RCPM classics include Dinero, Heaven on a Paper Plate and Go With the Flow, the first song Clyne and Dalton ever wrote together.

The Spanish-influenced Marie has already become a fan favorite thanks to an acoustic recording session with MusicFog during the Steamboat Music Festival and a video that was released on the Internet.

The beautifully written Small World touches on the difficult task of showing the ultimate act of love for someone by letting go.

As Clyne sings on Paper Airplanes, 'if you're feeling like you're too small for this world, or if you're feeling you're talking but there's no one there to listen,' sometimes you just need a place you can unify with other like minded people to weather the storm. And you may just find Unida Cantina.

Featured on the Second Saturday of every month at Public Works, NON STOP BHANGRA is a unique experience that celebrates the beautiful and vibrant spirit of Bhangra, a traditional Punjabi folk music and dance.

Imagine a scene from a Bollywood movie smack in the middle of a thumping nightclub-swirling colors, the rhythm of pounding feet, & the relentless energy of brilliant beats - that's NON STOP BHANGRA!

Highlighting the ancestral roots of Punjabi dance while pushing boundaries with contemporary influences, Non Stop Bhangra is a genre-busting elixir of North Indian Bhangra music and dance, mixed with reggae, hip-hop, and electronica. An ever-evolving collective of dancers, DJs, drummers, vocalists, and musicians, Non Stop Bhangra is a non-stop party. Featuring dance lessons and performances with Dholrhythms Dance Company, and music by DJ Jimmy Love, the group has won legions of fans with its monthly events in San Francisco. Dholrhythms Dance Company also promotes the artistic and cultural heritage of India with classes and workshops, providing a unique platform for people of diverse backgrounds to come together and dance in a positive environment.

Non Stop Bhangra was founded in 2004 when Dholrhythms founders Vicki Virk and Suman Raj teamed up with DJ Jimmy Love with the goal of bringing Bhangra to a wider audience. The first Non Stop Bhangra was hosted to celebrate the one year anniversary of Dholrhythms by providing a dance space for students of Dholrhythms Bhangra classes. Since then, NSB has made this traditional style a serious dance floor craze in San Francisco, drawing the most diverse crowds to join in the frenzy. NSB is a destination, creating sold out nights and write-ups as one of the best dance floor nights in San Francisco.

After 7 years of full capacity shows, in 2012, the award winning production moved into one of the hottest venues in the city, Public Works. With this move comes later hours, more room to dance and late night food provided by Kasa Indian. Becoming one of the ambassadors for the sound of Bhangra in the US, the vision for the New Year is to expand on the experience. With some killer surprise guests lined up in the New Year, Non Stop Bhangra is ready to take West Coast Bhangra to a whole new level!

In addition to the monthly event, the group has performed at some of the largest stages in the West Coast including San Francisco’s renowned Stern Grove Festival, TED XSF at Yerba Buena Center For the Arts, Goldman Environmental Prize Ceremony at War Memorial Opera House, Inaugration Ceremony of Mayor Ed Lee at SF City Hall, Michael Franti’s Power to the Peaceful in Golden Gate Park, New Mexico’s ¡Globalquerque!, Grand Performances in Los Angeles, Pasadena’s Levitt Pavilion, and Canada’s Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival and many more.

ADLER & HEARNE
Doors: 5:00 PM | Show: 5:00 PM
Ages: all ages

HopMonk -- Sonoma Beer Garden (MAP)
691 Broadway
Sonoma, CA 95476

From the Upper East Side of Texas outside the rural arts hamlet of Winnsboro, award-winning performing
songwriters Lynn Adler and Lindy Hearne tour nationally, serving up fresh harvests of homegrown music mixed
with seasoned original songs in a genre defined as Folk-Jazz Blues-Grass. Certified Organic.

In concert, she (Adler) and he (Hearne) blend their voices and instruments in a signature sound that reflects the
second-nature connection these two have through their shared singing and songwriting.

The two met in Nashville while on solo musical journeys. Years later their paths merged in Texas, where they
formed the duo Adler & Hearne, along with their indie label Spring Hollow Records. In 2005, they released a house
concert recording aptly named “Opposites Attract.” Later that same year, they founded Crossroads – a noted,
acoustic listening room in their hometown of Winnsboro, TX. Before hitting the road full time in June 2009, the
couple spent three-and-a-half “amazing years” hosting weekly concerts by national touring artists on the
Crossroads stage. Though no longer theirs, the venue continues to this day, and Adler & Hearne are proud to be
its official Artists in Residence.

Returning to the city where they first met, Adler & Hearne made their debut studio recording “To The Heart,”
released in 2009 and at one point during 2010 named among the Top 20 releases by the Folk DJ community. The
couple’s 2012 release “Adler & Hearne Live At Eddie’s Attic,” showcases songs from a June 2011 concert on the
legendary stage in Decatur, GA, and features special guest Michael Johnson with whom they co-billed on that
summer night.

Adler & Hearne's music has grown deep roots in the sandy soil and piney woods of their Spring Hollow Organic
Song Farm. The duo’s musical formative years share common experiences in folk, gospel and classical music –
organic influences that inform their singing and songwriting. But the subject matter of their songs knows no
bounds, nor does their musical style. Their live sets range from crooning songs of love and longing, losing and
finding – to covering touchy subjects with unexpected musical overtones – to camping it up with modern day
spirituals steeped in dry wit.

As self-proclaimed organic song farmers” Adler & Hearne's favorite places to sow their songs include house
concerts, community concert halls and folk venues, church coffeehouses and Sunday morning services, festivals
and conferences, schools and libraries, and venues of all description that provide an opportunity to have a
meaningful connection with a listening audience. That includes campfires, backyards, float trips, cruises, suburbs,
skyscrapers, villages and towns. Coast to coast. And worldwide.

Sonoma County "Rhythm N' BluesGrass" band Old Jawbone celebrates Bob Dylan's 71st birthday with their Fourth Annual Bob Dylan Birthday Bash. All the hits plus some of Bob's obscure gems performed Jawbone-style, with plenty of help from special guests the Honeymann Band,
Doug Jayne, Joshua Windmiller, and more!

In 1960, Dylan dropped out of college and moved to New York where his idol, the legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie was hospitalized with a rare hereditary disease of the nervous system. Dylan visited with Guthrie regularly in his hospital room; he also became a regular in the folk clubs and coffeehouses of Greenwich Village; met a host of other musicians; and began writing songs at an astonishing pace, including Song to Woody, a tribute to his ailing hero. In the fall of 1961, after one of his performances received a rave review in The New York Times, Dylan signed a recording contract with Columbia Records. Released early in 1962, Bob Dylan contained only two original songs, but showcased Dylan's gravelly-voiced singing style in a number of traditional folk songs and covers of blues songs.

The 1963 release of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan marked Dylan's emergence as one of the most original and poetic voices in the history of American popular music. The album included two of the most memorable 1960s folk songs, Blowin' in the Wind (which later became a huge hit for the folk trio Peter, Paul, and Mary) and A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. His next album, The Times They Are A-Changin', firmly established Dylan as the definitive songwriter of the 60s protest movement, a reputation that only increased after he became involved with one of the movement's established icons, Joan Baez, in 1963. While his romantic relationship with Baez lasted only two years, it benefited both performers immensely in terms of their music careers—Dylan wrote some of Baez's best-known material, and Baez introduced him to thousands of fans through her concerts. By 1964 Dylan was playing 200 concerts annually, but had become tired of his role as the folk singer-songwriter of the protest movement. Another Side of Bob Dylan, recorded in 1964, was a much more personal, introspective collection.

HopMonk -- the Abbey (MAP)

Sebastopol, CA 95472

Initially formed as an acoustic string band, seven years of constant touring has transformed Hot Buttered Rum into a plugged-in, percussive powerhouse that wows critics and fans alike. Their left-coast rock reveals an access to jazz, country, and world music that few groups can match. While the band's music belies simple categorization, its songwriting and stage chemistry delights listeners at every turn.

Hot Buttered Rum's story is one of evolution. The high altitude bluegrass era captured on their first studio album, In These Parts, found the band enjoying success at such diverse stages as the Newport Folk Festival, Bonnaroo, Grey Fox, High Sierra, Wakarusa, and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Along the way, the group shared the stage with some of today's most accomplished artists, including Phil Lesh, Bela Fleck, Ben Harper, and Nickel Creek's Chris Thile. In 2006, acoustic pioneer Mike Marshall produced Hot Buttered Rum's second studio album, Well-Oiled Machine, and captured the sound of a hard-touring band charting its course along the highways and byways of American music.
The continued expansion of Hot Buttered Rum's sound and writing found a home in Live in the Northeast.

More electric pickups made their way to the stage, along with an increased focus on songwriting. As the band developed a heavier sound, fans and press began to describe them as a rock band with acoustic instruments. It therefore came as no surprise when, following the departure of mandolinist Zac Matthews, the other founding members Aaron Redner (fiddle and mandolin), Bryan Horne (upright bass), Nat Keefe (guitar), and Erik Yates (banjo, guitar, woodwinds, and resophonic guitar) joined forces with Everyone Orchestra conductor and drummer Matt Butler.
The new lineup has recently emerged from San Francisco's Mission Bells Studios, where they recorded Limbs Akimbo under the watchful eye of producer Tim Bluhm (The Mother Hips). Featuring guest appearances by Jackie Greene (Skinny Singers, Phil Lesh and Friends) and Zach Gill (ALO, Jack Johnson), the album marks the beginning of a new creative phase. Limbs Akimbo now signals the arrival of a highly matured, impressively listenable, stirringly rocking, and pleasantly poppy sound.

Proving himself a forceful producer, Bluhm has struck an impressive balance between highlighting the multi-instrumental, cross-genre elements of the band's sound while avoiding the contemporary trappings of music that is complex and different merely for the sake of complexity and difference. The result is beautifully paradoxical: a tremendous, minimalist pop album full of hints, teases, and cameos of the band's complex musical personality.

In Something New, Keefe recites the familiar wedding adage something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. And right there, in a nutshell, is Limbs Akimbo: an album that is both an elegy and reincarnation of Hot Buttered Rum's past sound, that borrows heavily from the rock pantheon while sprinkling in just a little of everything else. Limbs Akimbo is an album that evidences the acoustic string band of yesteryear while unapologetically propelling into the scene a mature left-coast, drum-driven, pop-rock band.

Singer/songwriter IRA MARLOWE was recently described by the San Francisco Chronicle as: Oakland's sweet little secret. …(He) he sold his soul to the devil to develop his sound that he continues to perfect. There will soon be a time when he completely blows up Tom Waits-style and you can say you saw him when. Frequently compared to the likes of Waits, Leonard Cohen, James Taylor, and even humorist Tom Lehrer, Marlowe's music combines fine song craftsmanship with a unique voice and a gift for expressing joy, humor, sorrow and optimism--often within a single song. He's been featured on National Public radio, won the international Songs Inspired By Literature Contest, the San Francisco Best of the Bay contest, and--in his parallel life--the coveted Parents' Choice Award for his acclaimed series of Brainy Tunes CDs for kids.

THE ADVERSARY with TONY GIBSON
Doors: 9:00 PM | Show: 9:00 PM
Ages: all ages

HopMonk -- Sonoma Tavern Stage (MAP)
691 Broadway
Sonoma, CA 95476

The Adversary is the most recent project of Andre Mistier, former lead singer of New York based rock band ism. Currently a 5-7 piece bi-coastal band with members hailing from both Brooklyn and San Francisco, The Adversary's sound is a compelling bend of folk, rock, electronica, trip-hop and even a little gypsy. There are two sides to The Adversary: the electronic and the acoustic. Believing that songs are stories, and that stories can be told in many ways, The Adversary is dedicated to sharing its music in multiple forms. The original versions of each song were composed by Andre using his voice, a few instruments and a lot of computer manipulation, but when the solo project evolved into an acoustic band, these electronic compositions were transformed by The Adversary's unusual instrumentation: acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, cello, beatboxer, and backing vocals. The result is a distinctive and engaging sound, both highly danceable and beautifully atmospheric. The band plays regularly in NYC at Knitting Factory, The Living Room and Rockwood Music Hall and in San Francisco at the Rickshaw Stop, The Brick and Mortar and many others. For their Hopmonk show they will be performing as an acoustic trio with vocals, acoustic guitar, and cello. Hear them at www.facebook.com/theAdversaryMusic.

Ages: all ages

HopMonk -- Sonoma Beer Garden (MAP)
691 Broadway
Sonoma, CA 95476

From Seattle to Paris Wendy spreads the gospel of Chicago based blues piano and boogie
woogie. She’s well steeped in the stylings of Otis Spann, Memphis Slim, Sunnyland Slim
and Albert Ammons - the greats of boogie and blues, and honed her skills working with
contemporary artists Steve Freund, Otis Rush and the late Hank Ballard who’s love of the
blues showed in all of his rock classics.

Wendy has appeared with Charlie Musselwhite, Otis Rush, and Etta James and has been
featured at Berkeley’s historic venue, Freight and Salvage. She performed at the
Cincinnati Blues Fest at the internationally acclaimed Arches Piano stage, headed to
Boston with Hank Ballard and the Midnighters for a performance at the Boston
Symphony Hall and played before a sold out audience at the San Diego Museum of Art
with Hadda Brooks in what proved to be one of Hadda’s last shows. Wendy has
performed at many major festivals including Peer in Belgium, San Francisco Blues Fest,
and Monterey Blues, and Jazz Fests.

Solo or with her band Wendy puts on a high energy show. Material is either written by
Wendy or reinvented in her style and delivered with passion. Wendy is afraid of no guitar
player and has opened solo for Jimmy Thackery and the drivers and Deborah Coleman.

Along with her busy performing schedule Wendy is the producer of the Queens of
Boogie Woogie shows around California and the Blues Piano Orgy productions in the
San Francisco Bay Area. Songs from Wendy’s six albums are heard on radio around the
world and she has been a frequent guest on the nationally syndicated West Coast Live.

Recordings include :

Take a Little Walk With Me

“ Heavyweight guitarists such as Steve Freund and Dave Workman will attest to
Wendy’s extraordinary ability at the 88’s, as did the late Rock & Roll architect, Hank
Ballard...Wendy’s vocals are natural and unaffected, ...her piano work is of the first
order...” Sean Carney, Columbus Blues Review

You’re Not There

“ ..DeWitt is a sweet-voiced chanteuse with a strong reliance on jazz phrasing and
inflection. Her piano style is based on those of Otis Spann, Albert Ammons and other
blues masters, and she tears it up on the closer, “Chupacabra Boggie Woogie”…”

Billy Martin, Drums and percussion; Wil Blades, Hammond B-3 Organ

Drummer Billy Martin of Medeski, Martin and Wood and up and coming organist Wil Blades come together for a new duo project. The duo’s music is at once danceable and highly improvisational.

With a steady base as one-third of the renowned experimental jazz trio Medeski, Martin, & Wood, drummer Billy Martin has become one of the most forward-thinking, innovative, and influential percussionists in the music world. His ultra-sensitive, hyper-melodic drumming -- which explores the ideas of jazz, hip-hop, electronica, African music, and other genres -- has an organic feel to it, filled with soft, natural edges and fluid energies. When not performing with Medeski Martin & Wood, Martin continues to collaborate with other musicians in improvisational projects, many of which are documented on his own Amulet Records imprint, which he founded in 1995.

Blades, a native Chicagoan, has become the San Francisco Bay Area’s first call organist and is rapidly gaining momentum throughout the world. For several years, he has been named in the Downbeat critics poll under “Rising Star” for organ. Wil has kept the traditional sounds of Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, and “Groove” Holmes alive, while creating a more personal, modern sound. Wil has performed and recorded with John Lee Hooker, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Melvin Sparks, Idris Muhammad, Joe Louis Walker, Don Braden, Donald Harrison, Karl Denson, Will Bernard, Charlie Hunter, Stanton Moore, Anders Osborne Scott Amendola and many others.

album press release

Billy Martin and Wil Blades wanna make you Shimmy. The organ/drums duo waste no time getting right down to it on their debut album due May 22 from The Royal Potato Family in collaboraton with Martin's own Amulet Records. Martin and Blades go old school in the tradition of essential organ-groove sides by the likes of Charles Earland, Brother Jack McDuff and Groove Holmes. Martin, the drummer for the legendary Medeski, Martin & Wood, and Blades, a much buzzed about young organist from the San Francisco live music scene, first came together for a low-key, one-off late night set during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2011. The music that evening was so deep in the pocket that the pair knew instantly there would be more shows together in their future. A West Coast tour was arranged for later in the year, which played to packed houses from Washington to California. In the middle of the run, Martin and Blades ducked into a Berkeley recording studio to capture what would become Shimmy.

"We had about seven hours to record as much music as we could and hoped to get a full record out of it," explains Martin. "We were burning the candle bright, touring down the coast from Seattle. By the time we hit the studio we had about five gigs behind us and were well warmed up with the material we were developing."

The electricity between the drummer and organist runs high voltage through tunes like "Brother Bru," "Toe Thumb" and "Les & Eddie."Speaking of Les and Eddie, Billy and Wil turn out a blazing rendition of Eddie Harris' "Means Greens," as well as updating the traditional spiritual "Down By The Riverside." But before anyone thinks Martin has set aside his proclivity for rhythmic exploration in favor of straight-ahead groove, he demonstrates that the time space continuum is still fair game on tracks like the slinky "Deep In A Fried Pickle," the jagged "Pick Pocket" and the swirling "Give." Simultaneously, Blades takes this opportunity to coax some of the album's darkest and most psychedelic sounds from his B3 and clavinet. The kinetic chemistry between Martin and Blades assures that while Shimmy reaches back to embrace the retro, the duo can't help but push the tradition ever forward.

"It never crossed my mind to start a duo with another organist because I had just celebrated 20 years with my good friend and partner John Medeski. The last thing I wanted to do was make a commitment to another keyboardist," says Martin. "But after that gig in New Orleans, I knew it was in the stars for Wil and I to collaborate. You never know what's around the corner. With all the changes this planet has been through, you have to follow the signs when it all comes together like that."

"Listen Out” is the musical creation of Mark Sexton's passion for the sound and dedication of soul singers from past and present. This sophomore album raises the bar from the groups last work on "Multiformity". The songwriting, harmony and foundation all have seemed to fall right into place with this latest release. "Listen Out" urges their audience to stop 'hearing' music and begin 'listening' to music. This album is alive with passion and feeling as it should be due to its 'live' studio recording done in Seattle, WA. The construction of this performance has been two years in the making and has been well worth it. The patience put forth into this album collectively by the band is completely audible with a thorough listen to of this work. You can see and hear the work of art within after your ears have successfully began to "Listen Out"... Since 2006, The Mark Sexton Band has led the way in further innovating the sound of Soul & Reggae. The depth and body of the groups work stems from their deep understanding of music and the message that it bears. The Mark Sexton Band flexes a significant message in their music: pure emotion and love. This group takes pride in the production of their sound leaving no room for artificial feeling or contrived songwriting. After hearing “Listen Out”, it’s clear The Mark Sexton Band doesn’t think twice when it comes to writing from the heart. Ignoring short-lived musical trends, the sounds from this group move on to see something more meaningful. Three full tours across the entire West Coast spoke volumes about the bands musicianship and dedication to spreading their music and message. The success from their travels let the music speak for itself to all who witnessed their performances. Seeing albums find new homes at every show has pushed this dynamic group to new heights. With the bands potential hardly even tapped, this is truly a group you do not want to lose sight of.

Chip “Mancub” Corwin
(Space Cowboys, Sleevin Records, SF)

It is hard to nail his style down, most would say “funky, sometimes nasty”. Chip “Mancub” Corwin is currently voted as a top ten dj of San Francisco. He has been blowing up the block party jams for over ten years. Mancub has a very diffinitive style of turntable tricks that have earned him slots beside some of the dance industry’s biggest headliners. His turntable antics are too numerous to mention but include scratching while wearing boxing gloves, he certainly knows how to work the crowd into a frenzy!!You can hear his mixes on the internet radio station pulseradio.net, netamp.com or djmancub.com. The netamp show is aired on the last Wednesday of the month or archived. Mancub also plays for the infamous playa posse The Spacecowboys, ripping up a rare storm on the mighty Unimog at numerous unforgettable party’s. Mancub has recently joined Sleevin records and is supporting us in a big way. Look out for future singles and remixes of his work on the label.

SMOOTH
(space cowboys, SF)

Rising out of the 90's Drum 'n Bass scene in San Francisco, Smoove quickly became a fixture on the underground Breakz circuit in 2001 DJ'ing with Space Cowboys and their mighty Unimog. These days his signature power-funk Breakz sound can be heard every weekend all over San Francisco's night life, from underground warehouse parties to his residencies at The End Up, 1015 and Mighty. All his hard work in the night club trenches has earned him membership in nitevibe.com's DJ Dream Team since 2004 and was voted Best DJ 2008 by the readers of the S.F. Bay Guardian in their annual Best of the Bay issue. Taking his sound to the airwaves, Smoove has been featured on XM Satellite Radio’s Thump Funk show (XM 80) as well as Below Zero on Energy 92.7 and was a frequent guest on Future Breaks on KUSF. A multi-personality in the booth renders a playful gap between funky break beat for peak time discos... to silky downtempo for after hour smoke outs.... to globe trotting world beat for dusty bare feet.

A traditional style of mix and arrangement with the ability to gel various style, tempo & rhythm comes naturally shining a bright light on the delicate crowd control skill that most DJ's neglect.

Hailing from Sebastopol CA (wine country north of SF), his 5 year weekly (jUkE jOiNt) club event has pioneered dance music in the local area having hosted some of the worlds most renowned electronic music producers, while weaving variety skits & burlesque soirées along the way.

This guy wheres the dusty hat of a certified dee jay, music venue talent buyer, audio engineering graduate, stage designer, festival producer, club promoter & a fine irish whiskey drinker.

jUkE jOiNt~? It is what it isn't

A curious churning blend of electronic dance music that reaches new and old... digital and analog... organic and conventional touching no border within confinement.

Underground club meets rag time speak easy filled with secrets and surprises around each corner.

DJ's might stir booty banging breaks... thick sexy downtempo... to balkan gypsy funk.

Or you might reveal a burlesque variety show with exotic belly dancing. Or you might show up to a Bhangra lesson or be surprised to hear a latin funk band from Brooklyn.

As San Francisco’s ambassadors of gypsy rock, Diego’s Umbrella captures California’s cultural multiplicity with enthusiasm, humor and decadence.

These urban gringo mariachis have performed more than a thousand live shows, cloaked in elaborate homemade outfits. The band’s unforgettable performances have visually and aurally captivated diverse audiences around the globe.

Influenced heavily by flamenco, klezmer, and Latin music, Diego’s Umbrella has introduced the world to a new kind of popular music, with sounds reminiscent of Gogol Bordello, Flogging Molly and The Clash.

Shortly after migrating to Northern California from rural Wisconsin, DU front man Vaughn Lindstrom (acoustic guitar, vocals, lead songwriter) teamed up with California native Tyson Maulhardt (electric guitar, vocals) to create a musical ensemble that they dubbed Diego’s Umbrella. The namesake: their friend’s arm tattoo.

Diego’s Umbrella debuted in 2001 with its first album, Songs for the Farmers. With the addition of Marcus Schmidt (bass), Jason Kleinberg (violin, vocals, accordion), Jake Wood (drums, percussion) and Benjamin Leon (lead vocals, electric guitar, percussion), Diego’s Umbrella has been packing venues throughout the Western U.S. and Europe with its heavy-hitting live shows and filling airwaves in the U.S. and Europe with lively tunes.

The band released Kung Fu Palace in 2006 and Viva la Juerga in 2007. Within a few months Juerga ranked #129 on the CMJ Top 200 Chart. This spring Diego’s Umbrella will release the much-anticipated record, Double Panther.

Several DU songs were also featured in the X-Dance-award-winning documentary Sofia, the Quiksilver/Roxy surf DVD Shimmer, as well as CBS’ Elimination Station. Diego’s Umbrella also performs three songs in the Lionsgate comedy Still Waiting (2009).

With guitars straight out of a Tarantino movie, the group seamlessly blends mariachi, gypsy, flamenco and ska into one beer-soaked fiesta, with song topics varying from heartache to revolution. -NewsReview.com

Shovelman is a junkyard beatnik, a shovel guitar wielding surrealist folk superhero. Armed with a collection of pawnshop effects pedals and an old barn-shovel turned slide-guitar, Shovelman plays ol’ fashioned folktronica-grooves looped straight out of the ground. The sounds of Mississippi deltablues from the electro-psychedelic future, collide with the antiquated rubble of lyrical one-man-band hoboetry. Shovelman has become infamous on the west coast festival circuit (Lightning in a Bottle, Health and Harmony, Earthdance and The Oregon Country Fair) opening for bands that include Primus, Beats Antique and the Yard Dogs Road Show.

"Shovelman's music would be playing on the radio if Tom Waits and Les Claypool ever went on a road trip together...... and were lost." – Chip 'So Wat TV’ Santa Cruz.

"Shovelman has forged a perfect merger of the past and the present with his bluesy "folktronic" sound." - LA Weekly

KING YELLOWMAN BIO:

Yellowman (born Winston Foster, 15 January 1956, Kingston, Jamaica) is a Jamaican reggae (rub-a-dub) and dancehall deejay, widely known as King Yellowman. He was popular in Jamaica in the 1980s, coming to prominence with a series of singles that established his reputation.

Winston Foster grew up in a Catholic orphanage called Alpha Boys School in Kingston, and was shunned due to having albinism, which was usually not socially accepted in Jamaica. Alpha Boys School was known for its musical alumni.[1] In the late 1970s Yellowman first gained wide attention when he won a contest event in Kingston, Jamaica called "The Tastee Talent Contest" where deejays would perform toasting. Like many Jamaican deejays, he honed his talents by frequently performing at outdoor sound-system dances.[2] In 1981, after becoming significantly popular throughout Jamaica, Yellowman became the first dancehall artist to be signed to a major American label (CBS Records).[3] One reviewer of Yellowman was quoted as saying "Listening to Yellowman sing is like watching Michael Jordan play basketball. He knows he's got it, you know he's got it, and it's a trip just experiencing him perform."

His first album release was in 1982 entitled Mister Yellowman followed by Zungguzungguguzungguzeng in 1983 earning instant success. Yellowman's sexually explicit lyrics in popular songs such as "Them a Mad Over Me" boasted of his sexual prowess, like those of other reggae singers/deejays, earned Yellowman criticism in the mid-1980s. Yellowman appeared in Jamaican Dancehall Volcano Hi-power 1983 which featured other major dancehall musicians such as Massive Dread, Josey Wales, Burro Banton and Eek-A-Mouse.

Yellowman has had a substantial influence on the world of hip hop. He is widely credited for leading the way for the succession of reggae artists that were embraced by the growing hip-hop community in America during the 1980s.[citation needed] Eazy-E used a sample of his voice from his recording "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt", which also became a major hit by Eazy-E with the same title.[2] The basic riddim of his hit "Zungguzungguguzungguzeng" can be traced throughout the hip hop scene as it was reused by such hip hop giants as KRS-One, Sublime Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, and Blackstar, formed by Mos Def and Talib Kweli.[5] This riddim introduced by Yellowman in this song was referred to by him as "mad mad", as the rhythm was originally cut by Alton Ellis in 1967 at Studio One as "Mad Mad Mad". There has been a constant renaming of this signature rhythm (or riddim), such as "Diseases" (after the popular version of the tune by Papa Michigan and General Smiley). Yellowman changed the melodic phrasing of this riddim from AA to AB, when he began ending the second line in the chorus on a higher note. Many of the previously mentioned artists composing songs based on Yellowman's original riddim differed in their choice of using either the AA or AB pattern.[6] However, this riddim has little to do with Yellowman's talent, as it was most likely written by the Roots Radics band, also responsible for countless other reggae riddims recorded at the time. Where Yellowman's real talent can be shown is in his ability to ride a riddim like no other DJ at that time. He was the undisputed King of the Dancehall – the top-selling artist in JA and abroad, and also of a new ruler of a nastier, ruder form of DJ style of lyrics knows as "slackness". As Shabba Ranks later chat in one of his hit songs: "Where does Slackness come from, some blame slackness 'pon Yellowman..."

By the mid-1990s however, Yellowman released socially-conscious material, rising to international fame along with singers such as Buju Banton. Yellowman became the island's most popular deejay despite being albino. During the early 1980s, Yellowman had over 40 singles and produced up to five albums per year.

In 1982, Yellowman was diagnosed with skin cancer and was initially told that he only had three more years to live. However, this diagnosis proved to be inaccurate, and after several surgeries Yellowman was able to continue his career.[7] The cancer went into apparent remission during this time. It wasn't until 1986 that it was diagnosed that the cancer had spread to his jaw. Yellowman was forced to undergo a very invasive jaw surgery to remove the malignant tumor that had formed. This surgery permanently disfigured Yellowman's face, as a large portion of the left side of his lower jaw had to be removed to successfully extract the tumor.[8] He re-invented himself with his 1994 album Prayer, which stepped away from the slackness that gave him his initial fame. His latest albums are New York (2003) and Round 1 (2005). Yellowman was also a featured guest vocalist on the Run-DMC track "Roots Rap Reggae".[9] Yellowman continues to perform internationally with his Sagittarius Band, and has toured through places such as Nigeria where he retains a following of fans, as well as Spain, Peru, Sweden, Italy, Germany, England, France, Kenya and the United States. He also featured on OPM's 2004 album Forthemasses

Steve Pile gets it. With a guitar on his back, the Bay Area native has traveled the world, from Alaska to Austin to Africa, distilling his own hybrid of blues, rock and melodic African guitar music all topped off with a little cowboy swagger. But he's about more than just the music. (Press Democrat). When he recently returned to Gambia to study and record kora music with Jali Bakary Konteh, he powered it all with solar panels. The panels were financed through donations from fans and friends and were a gift to the Kontehs from music lovers here in the States.

His music career started, as so many do, in High School and with a 4-track and a few microphones. It was in Portland, OR, however where he quit his day job and recorded his first album and started hitting the stage and the road for real. The rain and some wanderlust sent him across the country to Austin, TX, in 2005, where he recorded again and played the circuit, only this time with one early influence(Brad Houser, bassist for the New Bohemians and Critters Buggin') and a slew of other stellar players backing him and his acoustic and National steel guitars. Various tours have seen him sharing the stage with the likes of Richard Thompson, Peter Case and even a Double Bill with Ramblin' Jack Elliott.

Now back in the California Bay Area, and working on his 3rd album with a new band, his sound has shifted from the americana/folk styles he nurtured in Austin to a more electric cross-cultural stew of styles. But he's still a singer-songwriter at heart. As one writer put it, he points the traditional singer-songwriter compass in a variety of new directions, affording him a freshness that's also somehow comfortingly familiar. The new album, Awake, due out in Summer 2010, will continue to explore those new directions.

Family Crest Band- If you haven't heard them before you're in for an audio treat. This 6 piece , indie-orchestral collective band, fusses rock with classical funk, and multiple jazz styles that often evolve into other local musicians participation, "forming an interactive community around a common musical platform, dissolving the barrier between artist and audience member." Seismic-Sound says, "Their songs are quite widely.. From symphonic, to cabaret, to flat out rock and roll ruckus." Their performances and experience as an upcoming band, vary from intimate house events to Grammy after party's. "They're uniquely talented. No doubt about it." -3rd Element Productions.

Looking somewhat like Dracula's nasty little brother who spent some hard years drinking and working as a carnival barker for a second-rate freak show, Unknown Hinson translates that vibe to his style of country and western-tinged psychobilly. The band is now touring nationwide, wowing audiences with outrageous and campy, white-trash persona and freewheeling, sleazy tone.

Hinson’s most recent CD release, Live and Undead, melds weepy twang, searing guitar riffs and lyrics that speak of love-gone-bad. Recorded at a sold-out show, an enthusiastic honky tonk crowd sings along with the King on every song.

Raucous, theatrical and over-the-top, Unknown Hinson isn’t just for the trailer park set anymore!

Unknown is gaining notoriety in the 18-34 demographic as the voice of lead character Early Cuyler in the popular show from Cartoon Network - The Squidbillies. The first four seasons were so well-received that an immediate green light was given to future seasons. Check website for dates and time slots.

The Pulsators formed in 1989 and released four albums over the following years. Their first CD, titled THE PULSATORS, prompted a Northern California music magazine to call them “one killer band with irresistible hooks.” The Press Democrat’s “On Q” responded to the second album, HERE’S TO YOU, with “this firecracker band proves it’s only getting better with time,” adding that The Pulsators reproduce “the hyper essence of their live shows, along with a tight professional musicianship”. The Petaluma Argus-Courier wrote that the album “captures the easy groove and good-time feeling that the band projects.”

Rooted in the fertile musical soil of the Sonoma County Wine Country the Pulsators are a five piece band that plays its own brand of music. With a get-up-and-dance kind of orchestration, their music has been defined as a spicy blend of driving blues, New Orleans-funky R&B, rock steady reggae and rock-and-roll. Their music supports an ever-growing legion of faithful fans who keep coming back for more. The Pulsators have been voted a Sonoma County fan-favorite four times in reader's choice polls given by The Press Democrat. In the Bohemian's music poll they won best rock band in 2009.

On their home turf, The Pulsators play festivals, nightclubs and private events but have also toured extensively throughout the western United States and began collaborating with New Orleans music pioneer Art Neville, who signed a publishing deal with them and lent his talent to HERE’S TO YOU, by performing on three of the album’s tracks. Art invited the Pulsators to open for the Funky Meters at Tipitina’s in New Orleans; they later played numerous shows with the Neville Brothers in Louisiana and California, including the House of Blues in Hollywood and the Fillmore in San Francisco. The band has been billed with such artists as Bob Dylan, Little Feat, Chris Isaac, Al Green, Taj Mahal, The Radiators, Buddy Guy and B.B.King.

The Pulsators recently finished their much anticipated fourth CD, LIVE!. The new album is filled with new Pulsators originals, a couple cover songs and live versions of Pulsators favorites that rock. It’s a combination of “make your feet move” dance music, great grooves and soulful harmonies with a lot of tasteful horns.

I've been knowin' Johnny and these cats for a long time. They sound as good as me! I always knew they were cold blooded and throwin' bricks. Check these dude's out! Art Neville NOLA

Monday Night Edutainment is the longest running party in the North Bay.

Hosted by DJ Jacques & DJ Guacamole of the WBLK Dancehall Massive.

Since the summer of 2001, WBLK and Monday Night Edutainment have hosted
many of the West coasts most talented DJs, Selectas and singers. The
"MNE Singers Series" has hosted such acts as Capleton, King Yellowman, Peetah Morgan, Kymani Marley,
Gyptian, Warrior King, Sister Carol, KRS-ONE, Gappy Ranks and many, many, many more.

Every Monday the Edutainment crew play a combination of reggae, dancehall and hip hop but you can also expect to hear some soul, classic funk, wild dubstep or whatever else the resident WBLK DJ or special guest is feeling on that evening. Monday Night Edutainment is a free and welcoming celebration of life and music, where the movement is focused on keeping the dancefloor moving while serving up conscious and
positive vibes. There's a reason the massive has been steadily dancing on Monday nights in Sebastopol for over a decade. Come find out why and join the family!

Some recent press for Monday Night Edutainment:

Monday Milestone - Ten years of 'Edutainment - Bohemian June 8, 2011

"In the 10 years since, MNE has moved across the street to the Hopmonk
Tavern and cultivated more than a dance scene. Guest DJs bring their crates. Headliners like Gyptian, Capleton and Ky-Mani Marley drop in with a live band. The overall sense is open-mindedness and positivity.
Some call it a vibe. Others call it family."

Bless up, Sebastopol! - SF Bay Guardian Online March 22, 2010

"Even as they helped to expand the area's musical horizons, for the WBLK Dancehall Massive duo the mission continues- not only to play reggae’s best new jams, but to bring freshness to the Sebastopol music scene."

World Fusion Chart topping pioneers Hamsa Lila took on the West Coast world music scene a decade ago and turned it on its ear. Blending traditional North and West African influences along with seriously deep danceable grooves, the band carved a unique place for themselves within the World Music genres. With their signature hypnotic sound,
the band has transcended across stages and festival scenes from Canada down to Baja, from Detroit to Denver, from Burning Man to Earthdance, the Filmore to the Crystal Ballroom. As a potent healing vibration, Hamsa Lila's musical intentions pierce even the thickest of energetic walls, and deliver their acoustic medicine in wave after awe inspiring
wave. In more recent years Hamsa Lila has stepped into an incubation and transformation period, many members branching into solo projects,
yet together still working on new music while keeping the public performances down to small handful each year, if that. Any sighting of Hamsa Lila these days could be considered a rare and Divine treasure, a kind of Sacred food for the Soul.
